New insights into DNA repair

Research from Aarhus University in Denmark is providing new details about the structure of a DNA repair complex, information which could improve chemotherapy treatment of cancer. The new paper, published in The Journal of Biological Chemistry, cites Kerafast’s LOBSTR E. coli Expression Strain, developed by Dr. Thomas U. Schwartz at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Immature immune cells aid in spreading cancer

Ninety percent of cancer deaths are related to metastasis, making research to understand its causes and identify potential ways to prevent it very important. In a new Nature Communications study, scientists at the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University report that cancer can hijack a certain type of immature immune cell to help it spread.

How an antibody inhibits Zika virus infection

We recently wrote about a Nature study in which scientists identified a human monoclonal antibody able to protect pregnant mice and their developing fetuses from Zika virus infection. The research was led by Dr. James E. Crowe of Vanderbilt University, whose CD40L Expressing Feeder Cell Line, used to generate B cell cultures yielding human monoclonal

Antibodies 101

Antibodies are Y-shaped proteins produced naturally by the body’s immune system when it detects foreign substances. These proteins are commonly used in research to identify, locate and visualize intracellular and extracellular proteins. Antibodies are also being used for clinical applications, in particular as cancer therapeutics and in vaccine development. Here you’ll find a quick overview

New insights into ubiquitin regulation

Research from the University of Würzburg is providing new insights into ubiquitin regulation. In a recent study, published in the journal eLife, researchers determined the atomic structure of a ubiquitin ligase implicated in tumor formation, revealing a dimerization mechanism that may be exploited for developing new cancer therapies. The paper cited Kerafast’s LOBSTR E. coli

Treatment of burns with fish skin

Treatment of severe burns is a critical care issue, especially in developing countries. In the United States, donated human or pig skin is generally used to graft on the injured patient. However, some countries do not have access to the biobanks and animal models necessary for treatment of burn victims. In Brazil, doctors are testing
